Technology Thursday
There's a big, well, biggish, storm rolling through the metro D.C. area as I type this and is so often the case I'm keeping up with it all with various forms of social media - at least while I have power and a network connection. My son's pre-school closed a bit early today. It was raining in the afternoon, and I kept working until I heard the tell-tale sounds of the changeover from rain to sleet, and then I left to go pick him up. By the time I got back, got him in, coat, shoes, hat, gloves off, and looked outside again, it was properly snowing. We've been ensconced at home since and I've been tracking the storm news on Twitter, FB, and at CapitalWeatherGang (of course).
I have learned about the following:
- One friend who left work at 3:15pm and as of 8:30 still hadn't made it home.
- A complete disaster at one of the local Metro stations, with various people on Twitter sharing pictures of hundreds of people waiting for busses in the driving snow and slush.
- Another friend accosted with snowballs by an unruly bus passenger after she reprimanded him for harassing the bus driver.
- Transformers blowing and power outage reports.
- Thundersnow - I saw some lightning myself.
- Lots of discussion of what's closing and what's open.
- Hospitals in the area need four-wheel-drive vehicles and are asking for volunteers.
- There are hundreds of thousands without power - our lights are still on for now *knock wood*.
--- And now it's the next morning and everyone is digging out. We were fortunate in that our lights stayed on and digging out wasn't too bad. But I'm now thinking that our next iPad should probably have 3G, much as I hate the thought of paying for another data plan.
I, too, was struck by how much I learned about what was happending the storm from social media - that is, until our power went out! Fortunately, our iPhones were fully charged and we were able to recharge in the car. I'm a huge CWG fan now, too!
