Travel Tuesday
Traveling, by eating… now there's a concept. I was pondering this after reading a blog entry the other day, titled "A little slice of somewhere else." The title appealed to me so I gave it a further read. Whilst it was more about naming restaurants to go to in sunny Melbourne when looking for an international food fix, it got me thinking: why couldn't you do this as a basis to travel the world, via your stomach?
"Hmm, I would really like to go to India," says Mother.
Google the closest Indian restaurant, get in the car and dine there.
"I would love to visit Italy," says Father.
Google a nearby Italian restaurant, get in the car and dine there the next week.
"We really want to go to Africa," say the Children.
Google the closest African restaurant, get in the car and dine there the week after.
Continue to do this over and over again until you've at least been around the world once, and then start again. Of course, if you're in a larger metropolis, you may also find you get the chance to dine on offerings from different regions of the same preferred country. What a treat!
Obviously this is a far cheaper way of pseudo traveling, and not as debt expanding on the credit card. It is much more time efficient, and you don't need nearly as many days off work. You could argue however that if you saved up the cash you were to spend on the dinners, putting it towards your adventure, you could eventually do it in person. That is also true. I would say though that unless you are wholeheartedly committed to making that trip, and booking the flights, book the restaurant instead.
The other way you could play with this is to dine in, and dress up as well. If Indian is on the menu, for example, access a sari, find out how to wrap it the correct way, and really get into character. Whilst it may not be as authentic, it can be a lot of fun. You could even do "trivial pursuit" questioning using the latest Lonely Planet for the country of your choice, borrowed from the library. This can also be a lot of fun, and even educational.
Traveling by eating, what a great way to experience the world.
